Marsh Harbor to Man O War Cay
Thursday, April 27th, we left Hope Town and an hour and a half later we sailed into Marsh Harbor. Lots of boats here in this anchorage but Hope and SeaBreeze were able to find a nice spot close to one another. We mainly came to Marsh Harbor for provisions and fuel and also to find someone to help Rick get the dinghy motor running again. So not long after anchoring, Kory dropped us girls off at the dock and from there we went into town via taxi to a grocery market/box store where you buy things in bulk and also single items too making it the perfect place for provisioning. And we provisioned!! Back at the dock we filled a large sized rolling cart to take to the dinghy where Kory was waiting. We barely had room in the dinghy for all of us AND the groceries.
Later in the afternoon, Charlie Walker, a marine technician came out to our boat after getting a lift from Kory and proceeded to work on our dinghy motor. Right away he discovered the fuel had been contaminated with salt water. So we had to empty the fuel tank and put in new fuel. And that seemed to do the trick!
Next morning by 9:30 a.m, both we and Hope, pulled up our anchors and motored to the fuel dock at the Conch Inn and topped off our tanks and away we went to Man O War Cay, known as the boat-building capital of the Bahamas which was just a short sail away. Once arriving inside the South Harbor at Man O War Cay we picked up a mooring ball. This was no easy task because it was very crowded and at times we were only 5’ -20’ away from two other boats next to us depending on how the wind would swing us. Tight quarters! We realized from here on out, we prefer anchoring! But using a mooring ball is all that is allowed in this small bay.
Saturday morning, Rick and I were up early and thought we’d go take a quick drive around the Harbor, but the dinghy wouldn’t cooperate. It would not start…again! Rick worked on the dinghy motor for quite sometime and was not getting any results. So we put the dinghy back in it’s davits and waited for our friends to hitch a ride with into town.
Once we made it to the dinghy dock with Kory, Kerry and Gracie we walked to a coffee shop where Lauren and Ellie were having breakfast. We also met up with a niece of a dear friend of mine, Naomi Albury and her adorable son Levi. We visited for a while and then walked through the Heritage Museum that is in the same building as the coffee shop (which was the original house, nearly 100 years old, that belonged to the first settlers). Next, we strolled through the quiet and quant neighborhood, the harbor, poked our heads in a few shops and lastly walked the beach on the Atlantic side of the island.
Later that afternoon Hope untied from their mooring ball and left for Marsh Harbor where they were planning to pick up a friend of theirs who was flying in that evening. Rick and I stayed behind and left two days later.
